St. Peter Cathedral in Trier – the Place of the Holy Roman Empire and the oldest German Heritage

Trier is a small German town bordering Luxemburg north to the Alps . Actually it was founded by Romans in 16 BC serving as the north border of the Holy Roman Empire . The historical heritage value of this town is significant because of two reasons:

Its founder – Roman Emperor Constantine.

Its honorable inhabitants – Roman Emperors including Constantine ’s mother, Elena, and German archbishops.

Its architecture – the oldest Christian churches and border wall – Porte Nigra constructed by Romans in the early AD ages.

Among numerous Christian constructions the UNESCO gave special credit to one of them – double church named in the honor of St. Peter and St. Mary. This great credit was given due to the Christina treasuries preserved in the cathedral – the Christ Robe and the nail used for the Christ’s Crucifixion. This double oldest Christian church was added to the UNESCO world heritage list and is secured by the government.

The St. Peter’s Cathedral was erected by Roman Empress Elena in 4 AD as a Christian church. Further, in the early twentieth century the cathedral was constructed based on the Roman church ruins. Nowadays, just two columns and foundation remain. The cathedral is large enough and has interior decorated in baroque style although it initial architecture represented Romanesque style featuring Roman times. The luxurious baroque decorations are presented by colorful paintings of St. Mary and angels on the ceiling and walls, statues of the twelve apostles, Emperor Constantine and his mother Elena who brought the Christ’s Robe to the church according to the legend. Arched ceiling and entries, high columns represent later Gothic style because the church was completed and reconstructed many times for centuries.

Besides preserved treasuries the church is famous for its magnificent All Saints Altar decorated by numerous figures, pictures and signs.

The ancient Roman ruins are still well seen for visitors whereas the Christ’s Robe is saved in a glass tomb. This great relic can be available for viewing only a few years for a century: it is demonstrated every four-twenty years with unequal intervals.
