Weimar – the German Historical Ground of Art, Culture, Architecture and Philosophy

Each country has its famous places where the most significant periods of its history were traced. The place which housed national and world-wide persons who changed the humankind history. For Germany such place is inevitably considered to be Weimar in Thuringia at the Ilm river. The town is also known as ‘Classical Weimar’ after UNESCO included it into the World Heritage List.

Even if you have not studied German history, culture, art, architecture or philosophy the names of Goethe, Schiller, Bach, Liszt, Herder and Nietzsche are obviously known for you. You can also learn the history of the famous Bauhaus and the Weimar Republic while visiting Weimar . You could not even imagine that all these important figures lived, worked and were inspired in one place – Weimar !

Actually it is hard to evaluate all sights that this city comprises now but it is worth mentioning the most marvelous ones. They are, of course, Goethe’s and Schiller’s houses, the grand Carl August Castle which became the Classical Weimar Museum , the National Theater, the Palace St. Peter and Paul Church (where philosopher Herber became a pastor after the Goethe’s invitation), the cemetery (where Goethe and Schiller are buried), the garden with Goethe’s house, the Anna-Amalia’s library and many others.

When the cultural artifacts are so concentrated in one place it is better to see than to hear. Moreover, there are some short virtual tours around Weimar available in internet.

Briefly speaking due to Carl August ruling during the 18th - 19th centuries and the presence of his noble and intelligent family the town gained its initial magnificent atmosphere that attracted and inspired so many outstanding persons. This atmosphere was so unique that German geniuses could not help but staying in Weimar and created their most brilliant works.

Although the town represented the outstanding past of German culture, art and history one cannot help but get inspired by every inch of each Weimar place. Here you can be sure that genius lives in each of us. The only thing we have to do is to feel the power of our ingenious past…
