Wieskirche – the Miracle Church in Bavaria Do you believe in miracle? People used to believe in something that can be viewed and touched. Religion and its legends is the only thing that is believed without any evidences. We just believe and keep the faith in our souls with the hope of redemption and eternity after death. The pilgrimage church of Wies is may be the only place where people can see the miracle witnessing our Lord love and sacrifice for the whole world. Initially its miracle – the tearing statue of Jesus Christ – was just the wooden sculpture made of separate residuary parts with pained bleeding wounds and tears. The sculpture was not considered as the successful one and was left without attention until it began tearing in 1738. Jesus’ tears stroke the world and the statue was brought to the small wooden chapel in Wies, near Munich , Bavaria . Too many pilgrims coming to pray and get forgiveness from our Lord made local congregation start constructing the church which aimed to glorify Jesus’ sacrifice and love. The church was constructed by two German architects – brothers Zimmermann. The interior became the classical example of Baroque style decorated with luxurious golden and precious gewgaws, colorful paintings and frescos. Besides tearing Savior the next most impressive thing inside the church is numerous paintings introducing Jesus life and death. The canopy does not exist physically but it was skillfully created by paintings: red and blue streams come up and down (red descends to show bleeding wounds whereas blue comes up to demonstrate light forgiveness), the large picture of the Jesus with his family, the Jesus’ resurrection and his life after death while sitting on a rainbow surrounding by cherubs. One of the brothers, Dominikus, admired his creature so much that decided to stay living near the church and built his house next to it. Thus, people are attracted by the church for two reasons: those who are interested in architecture come to do homage to the splendid rococo edifice; but most people want to do pilgrimage, pay tribute to the Scourged Savior’s sacrifice, see the miraculous tearing statue and get forgiveness.
