Wine Pastries

Ingredients:
*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*

1/2 lb (3 cups) butter
1/2 lb (2 1/2 cups) sugar
1 lemon
6 tablespoons wine
1 lb (4 cups) flour
1 egg, beaten
coarse sugar, or chopped nuts (for decoration)

Cooking:
*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*

Grate the rind from the lemon, squeeze and reserve the juice. Mix together the butter, sugar, lemon juice and rind until well combined, then blend in the wine and flour. Knead well the dough and let rest in a warm place for two hours. Pinch off portions of the dough, roll into long strands and form into fancy pastries. Allow the formed pastries to rest overnight.
Preheat oven to 350° F. Brush each pastry with beaten egg, then sprinkle with the coarse sugar. Bake until cookies have a dark golden color.
