Essential German Phrases

If there are only a few phrases you are willing to learn before your trip to Germany, it should be these. They could help you out if tight situations. If in a German speaking country the natives will also be more friendly and helpful even when only trying to speak in German. Talk to a person in his own language and you talk to his heart!

  1. Hallo! – Hi!
  2. Vielen Dank. – Thank you very much.
  3. Wie geht’s? – How are you?
  4. Mir geht’s gut. – I’m doing well.
  5. Mir geht’s nicht gut. – I’m not doing well.
  6. Ich heiße… – My name is…
  7. Wie heißen Sie? – What is your name?
  8. Können Sie bitte langsamer sprechen? – Could you say that more slowly please?
  9. Es tut mir leid. – I’m sorry.
  10. Verzeihen Sie. – Forgive me.
  11. Ich habe mich verlaufen.– I’m lost.
  12. Schreiben Sie das bitte für mich auf. – Please write that down for me.
  13. Macht nichts. – Never mind.
  14. In Ordnung. – All right.
  15. Ich stimme dir zu. – I agree with you.
  16. Haben Sie schon auf? – Are you open yet?
  17. Darf ich mal vorbei?– May I pass by?
  18. Schön, Sie kennenzulernen. – Nice to get to know you.
  19. Können Sie das bitte wiederholen?-Could you say that again please?
  20. Alles Gute zum Geburtstag. – Happy Birthday.
  21. Entschuldigung! – Excuse me!
  22. Entschuldigung, darf ich Sie etwas fragen? – Excuse me, could I ask you something?
  23. Ich möchte nach… – I want to go to…
  24. Wie lange dauert das?– How long does it take?
  25. Zeigen Sie mir das bitte auf der Karte? – Can you show me on the map?
  26. Geht es hier lang? – Is it this way?
  27. Gibt es ein Krankenhaus in der Nähe? – Is there a hospital near here?
  28. Es tut hier weh. – It hurts here.
  29. Ich suche ein nettes Café in der Nähe. – I’m looking for a nice cafe in the area.
  30. Stimmt so. – Keep the change.
  31. Das gefällt mir. – I like it.
  32. Ich möchte /  Ich hätte gern… – I’d like…
  33. Sonst noch etwas? – Anything else?
  34. Alles ist in Ordnung. – Everything is fine.
  35. Keine Ahnung. – I have no idea.
  36. Auf Wiedersehen! – Good bye!
